LITHUANIA

We are now travelling through the countryside of Lithuania, follow the white dots.

The border was quiet but just down the road it was like entering a truck rally. I have never seen so many trucks on one road. Thank goodness most of them were heading towards Poland. The roads here are in very good condition. We hope this lasts. Poland and Lithuania seem to have spent their EU funds on roads which is good for us.

This fellow was game in his horse and cart.

We were having a spot of bother finding a campsite so when we saw this restaurant we asked if we could camp the night if we bought a meal. We had a great pork roast and a good nights sleep.

The area we are passing through is very rural and the houses are made almost entirely of wood which is very plentiful when you see the huge forests we see interspersed with farming country.
I had read of the Hill of the Crosses in a book so we journeyed inland to visit the town of Siauliai to see it.
It is unique in its scale and history. Some crosses have been there since the 1800's but during Soviet rule when religion was frowned upon the people put crosses there as a sign of resistance to the totalitarian regime. After Independance people still came to put a cross here and now it is said there are more than 250 000 there. It is absolutely amazing to see.

They spread out on a huge pathway and into the fields. Every size from huge to minute.

This sign was in amongst them.
On the way north we started passing more modern housing estates.
Along the coast again as the weater is really warm. Parking is always a walk down through the pine trees. They like the beach to be quite separate from noise and traffic. When we got there we were intrigued by the little building on the sand.

It is a great way to change when you get to the beach.
It is time to leave Lithuania for Latvia. From the sign of the deer they look more like the dancing type than the signs we have seen previously. In all the beware of deer signs we have seen on our travels we have still not seen a deer. Nor do we really want to if it is near the road.
